Introduction

In a ball mill or other heavy mining equipment, the transmission system is only as reliable as its matched gear set. A ball mill girth gear works together with the pinion gear and gear shaft to convert motor power into stable rotating motion for the mill shell. When the system is properly designed and accurately machined, it delivers smooth torque transfer, lower noise, better load sharing, and longer service life.
For mining buyers, the key is not just buying a single gear component. The real value comes from a complete girth gear transmission system that is engineered as a matched solution for industrial gears, mining equipment gear applications, and long-term plant reliability.
What Is a Complete Girth Gear Transmission System?

Girth Gear
The girth gear is the large ring gear mounted around the mill shell. It is the primary torque-carrying component in the system and must maintain excellent tooth accuracy, circular stability, and contact uniformity. For large mining mills, girth gears are usually manufactured as heavy-duty industrial gears with large module profiles and strict geometric control.
A high-quality mill girth gear must also match the pinion gear correctly to avoid uneven wear, abnormal vibration, and premature failure.

Gear Shaft
The gear shaft supports the pinion gear and ensures accurate alignment between the drive motor and the girth gear. In a complete transmission system, the gear shaft must maintain concentricity, torsional stiffness, and reliable load transfer. If the shaft is not machined correctly, the entire gear pair can suffer from misalignment and uneven tooth contact.
In mining equipment, the gear shaft is not a simple rotating part; it is a precision transmission element that directly affects gearbox stability and operating life.

Pinion Gear
The pinion gear is the smaller driving gear that meshes directly with the girth gear. It transfers power from the drive motor into the main rotating system. Because the pinion gear operates under concentrated contact stress, its tooth geometry, heat treatment response, and runout control are critical to overall performance.
For ball mill applications, the pinion gear is often the fastest-wearing element if the matching or lubrication is poor. That is why gear supplier selection matters.
How the Girth Gear and Pinion System Works
Motor Drive
The electric motor delivers rotational power to the pinion gear through the gear shaft. In high-load mining systems, the motor output must be stable and well aligned to prevent overload and vibration.
01
Torque Transfer
Once the pinion gear engages the girth gear, torque is transferred to the mill shell. The large contact surface helps distribute the load across multiple teeth instead of concentrating stress at one point.
02
Gear Engagement
Smooth engagement depends on accurate tooth profile, pitch consistency, and proper backlash. If the girth gear and pinion gear are not matched correctly, the system can generate noise, heat, and uneven wear.
03
Mill Rotation
When the full system is correctly assembled, the mill rotates steadily under continuous load. This is why a complete girth gear transmission system is always more reliable than independently sourced parts.
04
Why Precision Matching Matters
Tooth Contact
Accurate tooth contact reduces local stress and prevents premature wear. In mining equipment, poor contact can quickly damage both the girth gear and the pinion gear.
Vibration Control
If the gear shaft, pinion gear, and girth gear are not aligned, vibration rises sharply. Precision matching keeps the system balanced and protects surrounding components.
Longer Gear Life
Matched gear systems spread wear evenly and extend service life. That is especially important for mining equipment gear sets operating around the clock.
Lower Maintenance Cost
A reliable transmission system reduces shutdowns, spare part replacement, and emergency repairs. For buyers, this directly improves total operating value.

Customer Factory Inspection & Project Approval

Before shipment, the customer's engineering and procurement team visited our manufacturing facility in China to inspect the 228T girth gear and 19T gear shaft in person. During the visit, they reviewed the complete production process, including raw material preparation, heat treatment records, CNC machining, gear cutting accuracy, and final inspection procedures.
Our quality engineers presented detailed reports covering tooth profile inspection, gear pitch measurement, hardness testing, UT & MT inspection, geometric runout verification, and surface finish control. The customer also witnessed the trial assembly and dimensional verification of the transmission components.
After the inspection, the customer expressed strong satisfaction with the machining precision, production management, export packaging preparation, and overall manufacturing capability. The project was officially approved for shipment to Surabaya Port using a 20OT open-top container.
Export Packaging & Global Delivery

For this project, we shipped a 228T girth gear and a 19T gear shaft to Surabaya Port using a 20OT open-top container. This shipping method was selected because it provided a safer lifting path, better vertical loading access, and lower risk of damage for oversized mining equipment gear components.
The girth gear and gear shaft were packed with anti-rust protection, moisture-resistant wrapping, and reinforced steel supports. The open-top container allowed crane loading from above, which was especially important for the large gear diameter and weight. From the customer's perspective, the 20OT solution also balanced shipping safety, loading efficiency, and cost control. Complete export documents were prepared to support smooth customs clearance and project delivery.
